Consumer Demand - Divalproex is commonly used as a mood stabilizer and as such is used to treat acute mania. It is specifically used in the treatment of bipolar disorder to reduce the symptoms that include hyperactivity, a reduced need for sleep, aggressiveness, poor judgement and hostility. It is also used in patients with epilepsy to reduce the severity and frequency of seizures and in patients with migraines as a prophylaxis treatment.
Versions of the same product - Divalproex is also marketed under the names Depakote and Depakote ER
Miscellaneous Information - Divalproex is available in delayed release capsules and sprinkle capsules. Sprinkle capsules can either be taken whole or they can be opened and sprinkled on food such as pudding or applesauce. The capsules should not be chewed because each of the tiny beads inside are time release tablets with a protective coating. The medication should be taken at the same time each day to maintain the right blood level of the medication. It is addictive and must be given as a weaning dose when stopping the regime.
Divalproex is tolerated well by most people and has very few side effects. The side effects that have been reported are mild and do not require treatment by a physician. The most common side effects reported are tremors, nausea, vomiting, weakness, drowsiness and headaches.
Before starting Divalproex it is important let your health care provider know if you have any allergies, blood disorders, mental retardation, liver disease or cirrhosis or a urea cycle disorder. The physician also needs to know if you are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant or breast feeding. It is also important to tell the physician about all other medications that you are taking including vitamins and herbal supplements.
