Lamotrigine is a newer anticonvulsant drug used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It is marketed in the United States under the name Lamictal, and is produced by GlaxoSmithKlien.
Lamotrigine is used to treat several types of epilepsy, including partial seizures, primary and secondary tonic-clonic seizures, and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
Lamotrigine for bipoplar has very few side effects since it is chemically unrelated to other types of aniconvulsant drugs. The exact way that Lamotrigine works is unknown, but it is thought to work by restoring natural chemical balances in the brain.
GlaxoSmithKlien produces a wide variety of products that include anti-infectives, central nervous system, respiratory, gastro-intestinal/metabolic, oncology, and vaccines products. Paxil (Paroxetine) is an anti depressant that has had wide spread usage in the United States and other countries. Flonase, the popular allergy spray, is also produced by this company.
GlaxoSmithKlien is a United Kingdom pharmaceutical and healthcare corporation with a long history in this industry. Starting back as far as 1830 when John K. Smith opened his first pharmacy in Philadelphia and started to merge with other health related companies until 2000 when Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham merged to form GlaxoSmithKline.
Lamotrigine is the first medication since Lithium to gain FDA aproval for the treatment of Bipolar 1 Disorder. It has mood stabilizing qualities that have been very effective in persons that do not respond as well to Lithium or other antidepressants.
Lithium, carbamazepine or valproate are closley related to Lamotrigine for use in treating Bipolar disorder. There are many epilepsy drugs available, but none with the low side effects and high end results of Lamotrigine.
On a final note, Lamotrigine has had off-label usage for the treatment of peripheral neuropathy, cluster/migraine headaches and neuropathic pain and different types of depressions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
