Seroquel XR for Bipolar Disorder
In October of 2008, AstraZeneca gained the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval for the manufacture of Seroquel XR Extended Release Tablets. Seroquel XR for Bipolar Disorder is prescribed to relieve some of the symptoms of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Dosages available for Seroquel XR are 50 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, 300 mg and 400 mg tablets.
Seroquel XR is a once daily tablet that has been beneficial to people who suffer from bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression or bipolar affective disorder, is a psychiatric disorder in which people suffer from severe mood swings. Bipolar mood swings range from manic moods, such as high creativity, to depressive moods, like having suicidal thoughts. Bipolar disorder can be very disruptive in the lives of people who suffer from this disorder. Seroquel XR has been effective in managing a more stable mood, helping the bipolar patient acquire a more normal life.
There are other forms of Seroquel XR. A older version of Seroquel XR, called Seroquel or Quetiapine, was approved by the FDA in 1997 and is also marketed by AstraZeneca. Generic versions of Seroquel (Quetiapine) are available on the market. Seroquel is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg, 300 mg and 400 mg tablets.
In 2011, AstraZeneca’s patent on Seroquel and Seroquel XR will expire. As long as these drugs are still FDA approved, this patent expiration will leave room for other manufacturers to distribute Seroquel and Seroquel XR. This new opportunity for other companies to distribute Seroquel and Seroquel XR may help to lower the price of the drug.
Seroquel XR can be used to treat many other disorders such as schizophrenia and sleep disorders. Seroquel XR is not recommended for elderly people or those with diabetes. If you are, or think you may be, pregnant, do not take Seroquel XR. Avoid alcohol while taking Seroquel XR. Immediately report any side effects of Seroquel XR to your doctor.
